Aurora Awards Retrospective Book Club

Starting January 2026 on Discord

The Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association has been around for almost 50 years! In 2030, we’ll celebrate our 50th anniversary. In that time, we’ve awarded lifetime achievement awards, the Prix Aurora Awards, and inducted many of our genre heroes into the Canadian SFF Hall of Fame, under various names and configurations.

Starting in January 2026, we’re inviting readers and writers, CSFFA members and speculative fiction fans, to join us in the Aurora Awards Retrospective Book Club. The aim of the Book Club is to read every “Best Novel” Aurora Award winner in the association’s history, in time for the 50th anniversary. We envision the book club lasting over four years, and capping off at the proposed Edmonton Worldcon in 2030, where we hope to host some form of anniversary celebration.

We’ve reached out to Aurora-winning authors and have received a really enthusiastic response, so we hope that we’ll be able to feature a solid number of author events (readings, Q&As, etc.) as part of the book club.

How it will work:

  • We will read one book per month, and discuss it using our new Discord community server, where we’ll also be hosting live online events with authors and guest speakers
  • Anyone is welcome to join us (you don’t have to be Canadian or live in Canada)
  • You don’t have to read every book, or attend every event, to participate – you can jump in and out as suits you
  • Where a winning book comes later in a series, we will dedicate one month to reading each preceding entry in that series; when this happens we’ll only organize one meetup for the whole series
  • Given the above, the total number of books read will be about 55, over a four-and-a-half year period
  • The book club will be organized by CSFFA board member Kalin Stacey, but we’ll be seeking volunteer discussion leaders and/or event moderators — if you would like to help out please reach out at volunteer.csffa@gmail.com.
